Kapact's Rant: Kapact to Mister Obama: "You lie!"
"We will have a public, uh, process for forming this plan. It'll be televised on C-SPAN.... It will be transparent and accountable to the American people." --Barack Obama, November 2007
"That's what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are, because part of what we have to do is enlist the American people in this process." --Barack Obama, January 2008
"[T]hese negotiations will be on C-SPAN..." --Barack Obama, January 2008
"We're gonna do all these negotiations on C-SPAN so the American people will be able to watch these negotiations." --Barack Obama, March 2008
"All this will be done on C-SPAN in front of the public." --Barack Obama, April 2008
"I want the negotiations to be taking place on C-SPAN." --Barack Obama, May 2008
"[W]e'll have the negotiations televised on C-SPAN, so that people can see who is making arguments on behalf of their constituents, and who is, who are making arguments on behalf of the drug companies or the insurance companies." --Barack Obama, August 2008
"We will work on this process publicly. It'll be on C-SPAN. It will be streaming over the Net." --Barack Obama, November 2008
Well, it turns out this administration has as much respect for their own campaign promises as they do for the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence (that archaic bit about 'endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights', as opposed to 'endowed by Obama/Reid/Pelosi with certain rights that they decide you can handle', and some obscure reference to taxation without representation). The legislature has handed down its latest decree, indicating that there would be no typical conference committee on the competing House and Senate versions of the health bill, as "leaders" opted instead for private negotiations with "key" congressmen and senators, none of whom is Republican. Once an agreement is reached, each legislative chamber will vote again and send the unified bill to the president.
Without a conference committee, a rule requiring public access to the conference report for at least 48 hours before a vote would conveniently not apply. This is just the kind of trickery and crooked shenanigans we've come to expect in a very short time from the Obama administration. This is a worse administration than the last one (not an easy thing), more ineffective and damaging internationally and domestically than the Carter Administration (seemingly impossible, but somehow true), and more corrupt than the Nixon administration.
So what does our legislature have to say about it? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) "There has never been a more open process for any legislation in anyone who's served here's experience." Speaks for itself, doesn't it? Ms Pelosi, you won't read this, and you wouldn't care if you did, but you are also a liar. A corrupt liar, and I hope you lose your job very soon.
So why is it they're so worried about hiding this glass of legislative poison? On page 1,020, the Senate bill states: "It shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection."
What's in the subsection in question? The infamous "death panel" -- the Independent Medicare Advisory Board (IMAB), whose objective will be to "reduce the per capita rate of growth in Medicare spending" (in other words, to ration health care).
In effect, the bill creates an eternal law by prohibiting future elected Congresses from making changes to this subsection. We must simply pray that Republicans have the courage to take this illegal rag to the Supreme Court, and further pray that the Supreme Court has the integrity to strike it down.
I'll also add this about Harry Reid, soon to be ex-senator from Nevada.... if a Republican had said what you said, they would be called racist. And what is really wrong with what you said is that it assumes that every white voter is racist. Don't you dare call me a racist. Don't you dare.
Miss Ginny's Diary Jan 10th 2010
Meow to you from me, Ginny and HM says hello.
Chatter With Kate Jan 10th 2010
Hello to you all. My goodness – I have been watching the Weather Channel covering the exceptionally cold weather for those folk who live in the American east, their Midwest and their northern plains. There was one place today that was going to have a wind chill of -52 degrees. Wow, you would need every bit of warm clothing you have and lots of layers of clothing to cope with this kind of a temperature. As the good folk on the Weather Channel said, it is too dangerous to be out in this weather for long and not to go if you don’t have to. In Europe it looks just as bad especially in England which looked like a total whiteout. I got caught in a whiteout once while I was driving a visitor to the airport in Colorado Springs (USA). It came on really quickly and was quite scary. Fortunately for us we were close to the turnoff for the airport and coasted quietly behind another car going to the airport. I worry about the folk who live on the streets – it cannot be easy to deal with. I bless the fact that I have a roof over my head, a kind husband and some crazy cats to keep me company on these cold nights. I like to put a big saucepan (kettle) on the stove and have on-going soup available to eat in this weather. I generally start with water of course and from there I put in all sorts of things. It is a nice change from coffee and tea etc. to have a mug or cup of soup broth. I have a small container on the kitchen bench where I try to put little leftover bits so I can throw them out for the little birds who brave the winter winds and snow. When we move to a new state soon (a very snowy one!) right near the Canadian border, I am going to try and get an old card table and put it outside and then get some cheap wild bird seed and suet so the little birds have food. When we lived in Illinois (USA) we used to do this and we got a pair of cardinals coming regularly to feed. I so love the cardinals. The male with his very bright red feathers looks truly wonderful against a snowy background. One thing that bothers me when I look at all this icy, snowy weather is the way that only the minority of drivers seem to take things carefully. Why is it that drivers still tend to go way too fast when the road police and weather folk are all telling them to slow down? One would think that sensibility would set in but judging by all the accidents and videos of cars spinning out etc. that we are seeing on the news, a lot of drivers don’t seem to be learning any lessons. Well that’s it for me for today. Take care and keep safe, well and cosy and warm, wherever you are. If you would like to chat with me, please feel free to do so. I love to hear from folk around the world. It’s a great planet. Let’s look after it and learn about each other.
Cheers, Kate.
Kate’s Cooking: COFFEE STREUSEL SLICE
Greetings and at the start of today’s column, I would like to say that I am thinking of those of you living in the areas of northern hemisphere where there has been some ferocious winter weather. My goodness, the snow and frosts and very bad wind chills have all combined in some cases, to be just awful. Lots of layers of clothes and cups of broth and masses of toast work wonders in this weather. I feel for the folk who live on the streets and I applaud the efforts of the many charities around the globe who are helping them by finding warm coats, other clothing, shoes and food and handing these things out to the less fortunate amongst us. Well done you.The column today involves what is probably my favourite thing to eat with coffee or to have amongst other goodies for an afternoon tea with friends. It is not too expensive to make and is truly delicious in flavour. I have given this recipe out a lot over the years and I thought you all might like to try it. The recipe may look like a lot of work at first glance, but this really isn’t so and you will, I am sure, enjoy it. So here then is COFFEE STREUSEL SLICE.
BASE
125gm (4 ounces) butter or margarine
¼ cup sugar
1 ¼ cups flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
Cream the butter and sugar and stir in the flour and mix to a firm dough. Press evenly into a greased swiss roll tin or an expandable baking dish that gives you a 12x10” base (approx.) Bake in a moderate oven for about 10 minutes then follow this by spreading the base with the filling and then grate the topping over the filling and bake for a further 10 to 15 minutes until the topping feels firm. Stand for at least 15 minutes before cutting into bars and leave to cool on a wire rack.
FILLING
400gm can sweetened condensed milk
30gm (1 ounce) butter or margarine
2 tablespoons maple syrup (golden syrup in British countries is good)
3 teaspoons instant coffee powder
approx. 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
Combine the condensed milk, butter or margarine, syrup and coffee in a saucepan and stir over a medium heat until mixture begins to show signs of a bubble or two and stir fast until mixture becomes thick and starts to catch on the base. (about 3 minutes) Stir in the walnuts.
TOPPING
1 cup flour
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/3 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
125gm (4xoz.) butter or margarine
Sift the dry ingredients into a bowl and rub in the butter or margarine. Mix to a firm dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Take care out there and enjoy this lovely coffee slice and keep well and warm.
A NOTE FOR YOU: did you know that a camel can close its nostrils in a sandstorm. How’s that for a strange ending to a cooking column.
Cheers everyone, Kate.

Kapact's Rant: Don't Tread on We The People
There is nothing in the Constitution that specifically gives Congress the power to require that people purchase a good or service. Insurance is a state concern, and therefore doesn't come in under the laws regulating
interstate commerce, nor is it connected to the authority that Congress once exercised to regulate the speed limit. And our liberal congress members seem to think that they can grant themselves this power. They forget that their power does not come from themselves, or any bills that they propose. Their power comes from We The People. If you'd like to see an example of this shocking mix of ignorance and arrogance, consider that at least two (in fact, many more) Congressional leaders cannot or will not explain where in the Constitution they are given the power to require that people purchase insurance. I have here information from CNSNews.com, quoting, amongst other places, the Conservative Action Project. Here is the information, which really speaks for itself:
Aside from constitutional questions about Sen. Ben Nelson's deal with Democrats on behalf of Nebraskans, conservatives are eyeing the bill's individual mandate the requirement that every American citizen must
purchase health insurance."Mandating that individuals must obtain health insurance, and imposing any
penalty, civil or criminal, on any private citizen for not purchasing health insurance is not authorized by any provision of the U.S. Constitution," says The Conservative Action Project, a group of prominent conservative activists. "As such, [the bill] is unconstitutional, and should not survive a court challenge on that issue." Supporters of the Democrats' health care bill have incorrectly contended that the individual mandate is authorized by the Commerce Clause, the General Welfare Clause, or the Taxing and Spending Clause, the Conservative Action Project said. But since the federal government has limited jurisdiction having only
enumerated powers, unless a specific provision of the Constitution empowers a particular law, then that law is unconstitutional. There is no authorization for the individual mandate, the group said. The Commerce Clause, which allows the federal government to regulate interstate commerce, does not apply to the health care bill, "because there is no interstate commerce when private citizens do not purchase health insurance," The Conservative Action Project said. The Commerce Clause covers only those matters where citizens engage in voluntary economic activity. "Government can only regulate economic action; it cannot coerce action on the part of private citizens who do not wish to participate in commerce," the conservative group said. Nor is the bill's individual mandate authorized under the General Welfare Clause, which applies only to congressional spending. "It applies to money going out from the government; it does not confer or concern any government power to take in money, such as would happen with the individual mandate. Therefore the mandate is outside the scope of the General Welfare Clause." And finally, the Conservative Action Project says the individual mandate is not authorized under the Taxing and Spending Clause or Income Tax. The
Constitution only allows certain types of taxation from the federal government, and the health care bill does fall in those categories.
As for the argument that the health care bill's individual mandate can be compared to laws requiring auto insurance an argument President Obama has made such arguments are invalid: "Only state governments can require people to get car insurance," the Conservative Action Project said. "While the federal government is limited to the powers enumerated in the Constitution, the states have a general police power. The police power enables state governments to pass laws for public safety and public health. The federal government has no general police power, and therefore could not require car insurance." Moreover, states require auto insurance only as a condition for those people who voluntarily choose to drive on the public roads. "If a person chooses to use public transportation, or use a bicycle instead of a car, or operate a car only on their own property, they are not required to have car insurance, and cannot be penalized for lacking insurance."
'Where in the Constitution...?"
In recent months, CNSNews.com has asked various members of Congress where specifically the U.S. Constitution grants Congress the authority to enact an individual health insurance mandate. Many had no idea.
(CNSNews.com) Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) would not say what part of the Constitution grants Congress the power to force every American to buy health insurance--as all of the health care overhaul bills currently do. Leahy, whose committee is responsible for vetting Supreme Court nominees, was asked by CNSNews.com where in the Constitution Congress is specifically granted the authority to require that every American purchase health insurance. Leahy answered by saying that "nobody questions" Congress' authority for such an action.
CNSNews.com: "Where, in your opinion, does the Constitution give specific authority for Congress to give an individual mandate for health insurance?"
Sen. Leahy: "We have plenty of authority. Are you saying there is no authority?"
CNSNews.com: "I'm asking--"
Sen. Leahy: "Why would you say there is no authority? I mean, there's no question there's authority. Nobody questions that."
When CNSNews.com again attempted to ask which provision of the Constitution gives Congress the authority to force Americans to purchase health insurance, Leahy compared the mandate to the government's ability to set speed limits on interstate highways--before turning and walking away.
CNSNews.com: "But where, I mean, which"
Sen. Leahy: "Where do we have the authority to set speed limits on an interstate highway?
CNSNews.com: "The states do that."
Sen. Leahy: "No. The federal government does that on federal highways."
Prior to 1995, the federal government mandated a speed limit of 55 miles an hour on all four-lane highways. The limit was repealed in 1995 and the authority to set speed limits reverted back to the states Technically, the law that established the 55 mile-an-hour limit--the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act of 1974--withheld federal highway funds from states that did not comply with it. The law rested on the
Commerce Clause, which gives Congress the authority to regulate interstate commerce, and Congress' authority to dole out federal tax revenue. Someone who does not buy health insurance, critics have argued, is not by that ommission engaged in interstate commerce and thus there is no act of interstate commerce for Congress to regulate in this situation. All versions of the health care bill currently being considered in Congress mandate that individuals buy heatlh insurance. Americans who don't would be subject to a financial penalty.
Attorney David Rivkin Jr., who worked in the Justice Department under both Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, said that Sen. Leahy's response about the constitutional authority to mandate the purchase of health insurance "is wrong."
"None of Congress' enumerated powers support an individual purchase mandate," said Rivkin. "We have made this case in considerable detail in our recent articles in The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. Indeed, the Congressional Research Service, an entity that is usually deferential to Congress' prerogatives and prone to take an expansive view of congressional powers, when asked by the Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus about the constitutionality of individual purchase mandates could only say that this is a 'novel question.'"
"This mandate can only be based upon a view that Congress can exercise general police powers, a view profoundly at odds with the Framers' vision of the federal government as one of limited and enumerated powers," he said. "If the federal government can mandate an individual insurance purchase mandate, it can also mandate an unlimited array of other mandates and prescriptions, including the mandate to buy health club memberships or even to purchase a given quantity of fruits and vegetables."
"This state of affairs would completely warp our constitutional fabric, vitiate any autonomous role for the states and eviscerate individual liberty," said Rivkin. "It is profoundly un-American."
This is not the first time Congress has considered forcing Americans to buy health insurance. In 193-94, an individual mandate was a key component of then-President Bill Clinton's health care reform proposal.
The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office said in a 1994 report that for federal government to order Americans to buy health insurance would be "unprecedented," adding that the government had "never required" Americans to purchase anything. "A mandate requiring all individuals to purchase health insurance would be an unprecedented form of federal action," CBO found. "The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States," said the CBO report.
"An individual mandate would have two features that, in combination, would make it unique. First, it would impose a duty on individuals as members of society. Second, it would require people to purchase a specific service that would be heavily regulated by the federal government." Although Sen. Leahy said that "nobody" questions that Congress has the authority to force Americans to buy health insurance, Republican members of the Senate Finance Committee did question whether Congress had that authority when the health-care bill was being debated in their committee. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah) tried to offer an amendment that would expedite judicial review of the bill were it enacted, but Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (D.-Mont.) ruled that Hatch's amendment was out of order.
(CNSNews.com) When CNSNews.com asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday where the Constitution authorized Congress to order Americans to buy health insurance--a mandate included in both the House and Senate versions of the health care bill--Pelosi dismissed the question by saying:
"Are you serious? Are you serious?"
Pelosi's press secretary later responded to written follow-up questions from CNSNews.com by emailing CNSNews.com a press release on the "Constitutionality of Health Insurance Reform," that argues that Congress derives the authority to mandate that people purchase health insurance from its constitutional power to regulate interstate commerce. The exchange with Speaker Pelosi on Thursday occurred as follows:
CNSNews.com: "Madam Speaker, where specifically does the Constitution grant Congress the authority to enact an individual health insurance mandate?"
Pelosi: "Are you serious? Are you serious?"
CNSNews.com: "Yes, yes I am."
Pelosi then shook her head before taking a question from another reporter. Her press spokesman, Nadeam Elshami, then told CNSNews.com that asking the speaker of the House where the Constitution authorized Congress to mandated that individual Americans buy health insurance as not a "serious question." "You can put this on the record," said Elshami. "That is not a serious question. That is not a serious question."
Later on Thursday, CNSNews.com followed up on the question, e-mailing written queries for the speaker to her Spokesman Elshami."Where specifically does the Constitution authorize Congress to force Americans to purchase a particular good or service such as health insurance?" CNSNews.com asked the speaker's office.
most states, individuals must either purchase coverage (and non-exempt employers must purchase coverage for their workers)or pay a modest penalty for not doing so. The bill uses the tax code to provide a strong incentive for Americans to have insurance coverage and not pass their emergency health costs onto other Americans but it allows them a way to pay their way out of that obligation. There is no constitutional problem with these provisions."
warrant a response for three days!), but it is war, and it is real. If you understand that the Cold War was in fact World War Three, then what we have now, that doesn't interrupt Mister Obama's golf game, is World War Four. Sorry to say (because I try to see the best in everybody), but Mister Obama would react quicker to losing his socialist takeover of the government than he did to someone trying to blow up an airliner on Christmas Day.

Fantasy Trek: Summary of Events Stardate 0110.04
Strategic multi-fleet deployement in a long-term campaign. Fleet versus
enemy fleet. Ship-to-ship combat. Boarding parties facing off in the heat of
battle. Starships in deadly cat and mouse orbital combat. Troops on the
ground defending planets from ruthless enemies. And, of course, solid
story-telling that has always been at the heart of Star Trek. Fantasy Trek
is all of that and more. Using your unique skills in the Trek universe,
whether they are tactical or strategic combat or problem-solving and RPG
story-telling, you contribute toa no-limits perpetual Star Trek universe.
There is no cost, no software to install, and no minimum system
requirements. Fantasy Trek is an imagination-based PBEMMORPG(Play By Email
Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game) that uses maps and online
documents (available at fantasytrek.blogspot.com), email, simple rules, and
common six-sided dice (or a random number generator, also available at
fantasytrek.blogspot.com).
To start your tour of duty in the center seat, just answer the following
questions:
Game Type:
Pure Combat
(Do you play for pure combat? You know that other events might decide the
nature of that combat, but you just want to blow things up. And think about
this: Do you like to micromanage combat, allocating power to personalize
your attack/defence strategy, making combat a personal match of wits, or do
you just like quick matches that can be over in minutes?)
Non-Combat
(You don't care about the combat. You like to write and you want to
explore.)
Mix
(You appreciate both aspects of game play. You accept that the ship you love
to write about may lose battles from time to time.)
Alignment:
Federation
Klingon
Romulan
Other (specify)
Ship name
Command crew
(You can stick to the TOS crew configuration of science officer, helm,
navigator, communications officer, etc, or you can use the TNG idea of
Operations Officer combining some duties. You can also customize your bridge
crew configuration. You're the Captain)
Note: unless you have something else in mind, all players in this stage of
the game get a Heavy Cruiser to start. The 'something else in mind' I
mentioned is if you decide you want a mission-specific ship like a scout or
police ship, which is likely to be a frigate or destroyer. Just remember
that you might be limiting yourself in a case like that. And don't be
intimidated by the need to create a command crew. If you're a story-teller,
you're used to this, but it isn't necessary to start. And if you're in it
for pure combat, the command crew is recommended but not necessary.
That is really all you need to start. I will happily walk any new players
through the first few missions. If you are concerned that you don't have
enough time to contribute, don't be. This game is as casual as you want.
Exploring takes as much or as little time as you want. Write once a day or
once a week. A hundred words or a thousand. The most intense level of this
game, heavy combat takes a commitment of no more than one email a day. And
even in that case, if you miss a day, it's forgivable. Even the moderator
has a RL and the occasional computer issue. The game is turn-based. Combat
results will be posted online daily. And if it still doesn't make sense,
think of it like your favorite role-playing/writing group gathering for some
table-top game playing.

As the Ab'Qaff Battle Group enters the rift it is revealed that the series
of explosions in the Tal'Ihnor Gates system have rendered the rift extremely
unstable. There is no guarantee that the ships will survive the journey, but
they have no choice. The ha'dibah who invaded Klingon space will not give
up. They will repair their rift and come back with a vengeance. Push through
the rift.
On the other side of the rift, you discover a starbase and two heavy
cruisers. Energy readings coming from the starbase match those of the device
that was destroyed in the Tal'Ihnor Gates system. Pull the two heavy
cruisers away from the starbase and destroy them. Then swing back and attack
the starbase. Bring down the starbase's shields (10/15 damage), then beam
sufficient boarding parties to overwhelm the base's 20 teams of defenders.
Once you've captured the base, you'll have access to all of the enemy
intelligence and technology, and a base from which to strike.
Objectives:
Assist in the destruction of the two heavy cruisers
Help bring down the Sha'kurian starbase's shields
Command the boarding parties to capture the base

Stardate 0110.03 Command candidate Sompek, IKS tIHoy. Tal'Ihnor Gates system
As we began to push through the Sha'kurian rift, sensors showed an
instability in the wormhole-like subspace structure, possibly a result of
the destruction of the invader's device. A quick analysis suggested that
ships passing through the rift could be destroyed. I advised General Kapact.
I was not surprised (though I was pleased) to learn that he had detected the
same thing, and we would not be deterred in our quest. As we passed through,
I could see the other ships, all so much larger than the tI'Hoy, and knew
that any of them could be destroyed without the glory of battle.
But finally, we were through. The entire fleet made it safely through. Then
we were faced with a truly daunting sight. A massive Sha'kurian starbase,
with two of their heavy cruisers holding station. Through a secure channel,
General Kapact ordered us to draw the heavy cruisers to away from the
protection of their base and destroy them.

The battle to capture the Sha'kurian starbase was savage, and more than a
third of our heroic warriors were lost to the invaders, but our numbers, as
well as our spirit, lifted by the rightness of our cause and the honored

Federation heavy cruisers. While it would have been glorious to engage these
ships, I decided that it would also be foolhardy. As per orders, I contacted
the Strike Fleet for assistance. I was ordered to leave immediately and
proceed to our next objective. Discretion, in this case, was a bitter pill
to swallow, but defeat and dishonor would have been worse.
Arriving cloaked in the Eisenhower system, we encountered two Oberth Class
frigates. I ordered my escorts to warp to the USS Meredith while I went
after the USS Antilles

The Oberth class escorts provided minimal sport. Tedious, with no real
challenge. Still, all missions are important. Our next objective is the
Bernard system. We cloaked, and went into warp.
Upon arrival, we detected three Clysdale Class freighters and a Miranda
Class Light Cruiser. I ordered the Chuvon and the Pipeq to form on me and
assault the Miranda first.

As the last freighter was blowing up, we received a distress signal from the
IKS tIHoy, in the Halsey system. Its captain reported that they had been
overwhelmed by Federation boarding parties, and was unable to even
self-destruct. If the captain and crew were to die with honor, it will have
to be by our hand. I immediately ordered the Chuvon and Pipeq to cloak and
follow me into warp.
Upon arrival in the Halsey system, I immediately detected the B'rel Class
tIHoy. Ordering my escorts to form on me, I set an intercept course. The
tIHoy's shields were down, and it was incapable of defending itself. With no
joy in my heart, I decloaked at close range and blew it apart. Then we
turned our attention to the Constitution Class Heavy Cruiser USS Repulse and
the Akula Class Destroyer USS Valiant. The Repulse immediately turned to
attack, while the Valiant, which had suffered some damage, retreated. We
cloaked, then fell upon the Repulse with great vengeance and furious anger.

The Starship Defiant was not the only Starfleet vessel to run afoul of the
Tholian Assembly. On stardate 2794.4, the Akula Class Destroyer USS Sparta
was patrolling the Klingon neutral zone when it discovered a ship that
appeared to be stuck in a gravity well. The ship was of Federation design,
roughly similar to the Akula configuration, with a saucer positioned between
two nacelles. That is where the similarities ended. This ship was easily
twice the size of the Sparta, capable, based on projections and
extrapolations from the Sparta's technical specifications, of holding at
least 800 crew. Attempts to discern hull markings for name or registration
were unsuccessful due to the tell-tale visual shimmering effect that has
come to be associated with Tholian interspatial corridors. Life reading
scans showed no definite signs, though they were unable to run detailed
scans due to unusual electromagnetic interference blanketing the area.
Repeated attempts to contact the crew or the ships onboard computer were
unsuccessful. There was little question of what needed to be done.
Mysterious or not, unidentified or not, a Federation starship is a
Federation starship. But with Klingons beginning to close on the area,
Captain Robau knows that this could, in the end, be anything but a routine
rescue/recovery mission.
The Klingons are less than ten minutes away, and register as a D7 Heavy
Cruiser, and a smaller, unidentified profile. In a pure combat sense,
Captain Robau knows that he is outmatched. He also knows that the Klingons
will either destroy the ship, or worse, take it for the technology.
What should be Captain Robau's course of action?
(TMP Era) "Enmeshed"
Captain Robau has no choice but to attempt a rescue, despite the hazard
presented by apparent Tholian activity, as well as the obvious danger of
Klingon attack. He decides to extend scans ahead, to gather whatever
information he can before arriving on the scene. As the Sparta closes to
transporter range, sensors show thousands of microfractures in the hull,
allowing for more detailed internal scans. He is relieved to discover no
life forms aboard, simplifying the task before him.
A detailed scan of the mysterious ship reveals low-level power emanations,
leading from the electro plasma system (EPS) to the tactical systems. Any
residual power left in the matter/antimatter reaction assembly would still
be available to any functioning tactical systems. That might give them a
chance to mount a brief defence against the Klingon attack. Of course, this
would require transporting crew to the ship, which is hazardous for a number
of obvious reasons. Is it worth the risk?
What are your orders, Captain?

Dangerous and unpredictable. If I had to sum up our experience on this Class
E world in two words, they would certainly be 'dangerous' and
'unpredictable'. Upon achieving standard orbit of Onianka VI, we received
what can only be described as a psychic 'hail' from a non-corporeal entity
that claimed to be a child of an energy-based, space-going species. As we
executed a detailed scan of the surface in an attempt to pinpoint the
creature's location, it used our sensor beam to locate us in orbit. Seconds
later, it had penetrated the ship through the primary sensor array and
scanned every bit of information in our computer bank. Based on computer
forensics, we determined that it was looking for references to Enterprise
Captain James T Kirk, as well as his logs referring to a planet known as
Gothos. Not only was our captain killed in an attempt to disengage the
computer, but the primary core was wiped out. Once the creature had
completed its search, it left for parts unknown. We were forced to travel to
starbase using one of only two redundant cores, and warn Starfleet of the
apparent threat to Captain Kirk.

Dev Notes:
The bloody knock down drag out head to head is finally turning inexorably in
the Klingon direction. This has been a fun ride, and I've worked hard to
balance efforts on both sides, working hard for both Empires. But the fact
is that the numbers have turned in the Klingon direction. There were a few
moments that were simply disastrous for the Fed side, and despite some
almost miraculous comeback attempts, they never recovered. They have a
random fleet disadvantage of -2, and the 3rd Klingon Fleet is marching hard.
Capture attempts have been instrumental, and I see some room for tweaking
there. First off, there needs to be some specification for simple combat
boarding party/marine capabilities. And the capturing ship needs to lower
shields, say, for that volley when transporters are engaged, the beaming
ship has 10 points of damage. That's a real vulnerability that needs to be
well-timed while boarding parties are transported. All in the name of
perfecting the multiple levels and aspects of Fantasy Trek. I've completed
my 230th Simple Combat engagement, and my wife and I have completed 4 PvP
simple combat engagements.
The Tholian Simple Combat rules seem to work. Further playtesting is
indicated, but after seven rounds, the existing rules seem okay.
I also have a sketch (that I'm pretty happy with) of the Etlh Class Heavy
Cruiser. I've created a custom STD for that, including balancing the
weaponry on the thing, and I'll be testing it in advanced heavy combat. The
Etlh is roughly equal to the Achilles Class. It is also the January image
for the 2010 Fantasy Trek calendar. That is partly because the budget is not
conducive to buying the 2010 Ships of the Line calendar. It is also another
DIY aspect to Fantasy Trek. February is planned to be a TNG era Constitution
variant, called "Constitution Phase Two", after the planned Trek series
"Star Trek Phase Two".

Kate’s Cooking: APPLE TURNOVERS – FRIED!
Pie Pastry
As with most pastry making, all ingredients should be well chilled and preferably the bowl you might use for making the pastry. It is also quite a good idea to wash your hands in cold water and dry them before you start.
*1 ¼ cups all purpose flour
*1/3rd cup butter (chilled)
*Salt – about ½ teaspoon (optional)
*A cup of chilled or iced water.
Mix the flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Mix approximately 3 tablespoons of the iced water into the mix and press into a dough ball and re-chill until needed. NOTE: if you want to make more than three turnovers then you need to double the above ingredients (2 dough balls). The above ingredients will also make one 9” pie shell.
Turnover filling
*Approximately 1 pound of apples of choice
*2/3 cup sugar (of choice)
*Ground cinnamon – about ½ teaspoon
*Butter for cooking in a frypan (skillet)
*Powdered (icing) sugar for dusting when cooked.
Core and slice the apples and mix them with the sugar and spice you have chosen.
Roll the dough balls into 1/8th inch thick and cut into approximately three 5” squares. Using a slotted spoon so you don’t get too much juice in the mix, put about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the apple mix in the centre of the pastry square. Wet the edges of the pastry and fold over to enclose the apples in a triangle-shape. Press the edges together with a fork or the back of a teaspoon.
To BAKE the turnovers in an oven heat it to 425 degrees F. on baking sheets lined with non-stick baking paper if you have some. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown. To FRY the turnovers, melt the butter in the skillet or frypan and cook on medium-high about 1o minutes per side. Depending on the size of your pan you can cook about 3 at a time but if you have a large electric frypan then you might be able to do all of the turnovers at once.
Happy cooking to you and take care out there and be well and safe in 2010.
Cheers, Kate.

Kate’s Cooking: COOKING FOR ONE – Cornish Pastie
Greetings and happy holidays to you. The column today is for those of you who live by themselves. I married late – way after the normal marrying age of the 20’s – and for many years lived with my cats of the time and cooked away quite cheerfully. It is all too easy these days to go out to eat with quite a lot of cheap restaurants available. However, in the cooler months and on the weekends especially, cooking soups and pasta and meat dishes, gives a nice aromatic aroma to a home and if you live in a snowy area, a happy cook in a warm kitchen helps combat the chills outside. Today’s recipe is a simple one – Cornish Pastie. I love these delicious meat pies. I used to live in England and the British bakers are masters of the art of baking meat pies of all shapes and sizes. Cornish Pasties were my great favourite and I ate my way through many of them while there. They are an excellent way of using up left over meat from a roast. It is worth buying a roast of meat even if you live by yourself. It will give you some good meals for a few days. Preparation of a roast is minimal and in a moderate oven or even an electric frypan, they don’t take too long to cook. The first day of using a roast is mostly done with vegetables of choice and lots of gravy. Cooking extra gravy comes in useful for following meals. For example, omelettes, curries and of course, the pastie. If you are using left over meat for an omelette filling, it is tasty to add chopped cooked onion, fresh green herbs and a couple of slices of tomato. My late mum, used to make the most delicious and simple curries with left over meat. She would add along with the meat and curry powder, celery, banana, onion sultanas and gravy and serve it all over rice. Here then is a recipe that I have had for many years, for Cornish Pastie.CORNISH PASTIE
1 packet of frozen puff or shortcrust pastry – defrosted. (If you wish, you can make your own pastry)
1 large potato – cooked and diced
1 cup cooked meat – diced
1 small onion – chopped finely
1 small carrot – sliced finely
1 generous tablespoon of chopped parsley
Black pepper
(Salt is optional)
3 to 4 tablespoons gravy
Roll out pastry to about 1/8” thick and cut into rounds about the size of a saucer. Mix all other ingredients and put generous tablespoonfuls in the centre of each round of pastry. Dampen the edges of the pastry and fold over in half, and press edges together firmly and crimp the edges if you wish. Bake in a hot oven for about 20 to 30 minutes. If the pastry is looking brown reduce neat to 325F (160C, Gas 3). Eat hot or cold.
NOTE: Generally speaking, I don’t glaze pies but if you would like to, do this by using a pastry brush dipped into a beaten egg. I have sometimes made quite large Cornish pastie’s if I am using them as a main meal and they are being served with extra vegetables. Enjoy these delicious pies.
Have a safe and happy holiday season. Happy cooking to you, Kate.

Fantasy Trek: Summary of Events: 1209.21
Have you ever wanted a Star Trek game that took in all aspects of Trek? Strategic multi-fleet deployement in a long-term campaign. Fleet versus enemy fleet. Ship-to-ship combat. Boarding parties facing off in the heat of battle. Starships in deadly cat and mouse orbital combat. Troops on the ground defending planets from ruthless enemies. And, of course, solid story-telling that has always been at the heart of Star Trek. Fantasy Trek is all of that and more. Using your unique skills in the Trek universe, whether they are tactical or strategic combat or problem-solving and RPG story-telling, you contribute toa no-limits perpetual Star Trek universe. There is no cost, no software to install, and no minimum system requirements. Fantasy Trek is an imagination-based PBEMMORPG(Play By Email Massively Multiplayer Online RolePlaying Game) that uses maps and online documents (available at fantasytrek.blogspot.com), email, simple rules, and common six-sided dice (or a random number generator, also available at fantasytrek.blogspot.com).
To start your tour of duty in the center seat, just answer the following questions:
Game Type:
If you are concerned that you don't have
enough time to
contribute, don't be. This game is as casual as you want. Exploring takes as
much or as little time as you want. Write once a day or once a week. A
hundred words or a thousand. The most intense level of this game, heavy
combat takes a commitment of no more than one email a day. And even in that
case, if you miss a day, it's forgivable. Even the moderator has a RL and
the occasional computer issue. The game is turn-based. Combat results will
be posted online daily. And if it still doesn't make sense, think of it like
your favorite role-playing/writing group gathering for some table-top game
playing.

Ab'Qaff Class Klingon Heavy Command Cruiser (KCVC) IKS Ab'Qaff
General Kapact Commanding
wa'Hom System-
The IKS Ab'Qaff and its accompanying battle group has completed its
assignment of clearing the wa'Hom system in the newly discovered Kri'staK
sector. One Romulan warbird was destroyed, and another captured. The
captured warbird was repaired and recrewed, and designated the IKS Krayak.
It established one planet bound outpost, as well as an outpost/refinery in
the system's resource-rich asteroid field. The battle group also discovered
and reported on two thousand year-old Vulcan hull fragments.
cha'Hom System-
The Ab'Qaff battle group had a similar experience in the cha'Hom system. It
encountered more Vulcan hull fragments of similar age, and signs of a highly
unstable substance known as tylium. The Ab'Qaff also witnessed the
construction of an advanced Romulan shipyard. The battle group destroyed the
shipyard while the Ab'Qaff destroyed two Romulan D'deridex Class warbirds
that were overseeing the construction. General Kapact is currently awaiting
the arrival of a Vulcan envoy to take possession of a sample of the hull
fragments.

100+ word log
"It is said that no battle plan survives the first moments of a battle.
Sometimes, despite our efforts to gather intelligence and plan accordingly,
we are faced with a relentless, implacable enemy that lunges for our throats
even as we reach for our weapons. At that point survival depends on our
ability to strike quicker than our enemy. There is no time for planning or
careful placement of assets. Each warrior may be either the forward lunge
that strikes a mortal blow, or the weak point in our armor that relegates us
to passengers on the barge of the dead. Honored dead, but still dead. You
must be the teeth at the enemy's throat. Strike with speed and ferocity.
Especially in the case of invasion, you must attack with every resource,
stopping the enemy before they can establish a beach head. Every second that
is lost is territory and momentum lost. Strike as if your very culture
depends on it, because it does. Strike hard. Strike mercilessly. And if your
enemy finally falls back in retreat, do not allow him the luxury of
regrouping or succor. Follow him to his home, and burn it to the ground so
that it can never again give rise to invaders."
Stardate 1209.04 Command candidate Sompek, IKS tIHoy. Tal'Ihnor Gates system
As we were examining the device that the Sha'kurians were building, it
exploded. The N'taka and the captured construction ship were immediately
destroyed. There was not even any debris thrown off. In the aftermath of the
explosion, a rift opened up. While I assume that the device was meant to
open this rift, and it simply went off prematurely, there was no time for
scientific analysis. Two Sha'kurian heavy carriers started to emerge from
the rift almost immediately, Quick scans revealed five more carriers
preparing to launch from a shipyard just beyond the rift. We must destroy
these carriers and the shipyard before the five carriers can launch, or we
will certainly be lost. Once we've destroyed the shipyard, I am confident
that General Kapact will order an offensive through the rift.
We fell upon the two unprepared carriers, overwhelming them before they
could mount any serious defense.

We then pushed through the rift, uncertain of where we were going, or if we
could return. But I felt a surge of excitement. Command, with all its
uncertainties, was starting to acquire a reality. A fine balance, like the
weight of a good bat'leth.
Then we faced the shipyard. It was an ungainly thing, with five elongated
pods around a central angular mass that bristled with weapons emplace. The
pods each held a heavy carrier, with work crews and construction craft
obviously working feverishly to complete the mammoth ships so that they
could be launched against us. As we made a coordinated approach, my tactical
officer detected weapons locks from several of the shipyard's emplacements.

Fortunately, General Kapact detected the weapons lock and ordered me to take
evasive action. This was not, he explained afterwards, cowardice or a
selfish attempt to protect me. It was, rather, a tactical move to protect an
important part of the fleet. In any case, the tiIHoy survived the encounter,
and the enemy shipyard did not. Now we push on into the great unknown. And
victory.
Klingon Academy:
Mission 01 Exercise
Beta-Ceti system
Primary Objectives
Destroy Monitoring Station
Cripple Probe Net
Destroy USS Banting (FF)
Maintain Element of Surprise
Defend Jamming Cruiser
Secondary Objectives
Scan Probe Net
Player: Kapact (veteran)
As a student of the Klingon Defense Force's Elite Command Academy, I am one
of one hundred students taking part in a simulated war against the
Federation. We are being led by the Empire's greatest living warrior,
General Chang. It is his mission to make sure that the Empire's warship
commanders are in that position because of their ability to command rather
than their position in our society. Graduation will result in immediate
posting as a warship commander. I am eager to get started.
Cadet Kapact in the IKS QuQVeS. Our mission is to follow the jamming
cruiser in as it allows us to penetrate the Federation sensor net on their
side of the neutral zone. Once the field is jammed, we will be signalled
that it is safe to proceed. Then we will cripple the sensor net by
destroying the prime probes that control the others. We are also to destroy
the NZ-027 monitoring station. Other cadets are carrying out similar
missions along the Federation border in order to open up a wide passage for
our fleet.
The QuQVeS arrived cloaked in the Beta-Ceti system, and waited while the
jamming cruiser went to work. It was an uneasy wait, but finally we were
cleared to attack.
We began to scan the probes, one by one, until we had identified the first.
Then I ordered the rest of the field scanned so that we could identify all
six prime probes. As we were scanning the probes, we were advised that the
jamming was in place, and we were cleared to attack. At the same time, we
detected the monitoring station 8,000 kellikams to port. It was a plain,
uninspiring installation set into a asteroid. Remaining cloaked, we closed
on the station. At 5,000 kellikams, we decloaked and attacked. Possessing
limited shields and no offensive capabilities, it was not a worthy opponent.
We then began to approachthe sensor net. Once we had destroyed the first
prime probe, we detected the USS Banting, an Oberth class escort warping
into the system. We attacked immediately, focusing on the ship's impulse
drive.

The battle was more of a challenge than I anticipated, but our superior
weapons and armor eventually overwhelmed the enemy. Then it was a simple
matter of clearing out the remaining probes. Once that was finished, we
warped back to base.

Our cloaked arrival in the Regas System was instrumental in clearing the
Regas system. We detected the Oberth class frigate holding station near a
satellite of unknown function. We maintained a cloaked approach, decloaking
and firing only when we were at point blank range. The Carver's shields were
down, and our initial volley penetrated their warp core. The enemy was
destroyed immediately. We then destroyed the satellite and recloaked.
Our orders took us next to theThaxius System.
0809.17 Upon arrival in the Thaxius System, we detected the Akula class
destroyer USS Hernandez at extreme range. Rather than risking defeat by a
superior ship, I requested assistance. The K'vort class destroyer IKS
Yuthwl' Hech responded, and arrived shortly. We both launched a cloaked
attack.

Jaghjech on the IKS Chuvon, in the Piachi system. Course was set and
executed immediately.
In the Piachi system, we found the Chuvon damaged and struggling to destroy
the USS Tian Nan Man. a Miranda class light cruiser. Fortunately for us, and
Jaghjech, the Tian Nan Man's aft shields were down, and it's hull integrity
was at fifty percent. I invited Jaghjech to join me in a cloaked attack on

Outgunned as we were, we were victorious after a desperate battle. Battered
but victorious, we both cloaked and set course for the Theta Omicron system.
Dev notes: For the cloaked attack, the QuQVeS gets to add 8 points post
multiplier on the first volley. Aside from that, normal rules apply. As it
turns out, a cloaked attack is no guarantee of victory. In this setting, the
victory over the Tian Nan Man took three attempts and a lot of luck. Next
time I'll have the Yuthwl' Hech join me in the Piachi system.

Rendevous in Punjab
Secondary Objectives
Call for Assistance
I am honored to have survived to achieve command of the Insurrection class
destroyer IKS qul mIwI'. My orders are to continue lightning strikes into
Federation territory, helping our forces to seem to be everywhere at the
same time. Commander Thok Mak has assigned the Pipeq and the Chuvon as my
escorts, and our targets to be the following systems:
MacArthur System
Nimitz System
Bradley System
Patton System
We will then rendevous with the fleet in the Punjab system.
During General Chang's inspiring briefing, we were reminded that it would be
foolish to attempt to take on more than we can hope to defeat. I can only
assume that just that possibility exists as we push further into Federation
space.
Arriving cloaked in the MacArthur system, we detected two Okinawa class
frigates, apparently unaware of our arrival. I ordered the Pipeq and the
Chuvon to converge on one while I attacked the other.

As soon as the two frigates were destroyed, three Constitution class heavy
cruisers warped into the system. Much as I would have liked to order an
attack, I decided that it would have been foolish. As per instructions, I
contacted the fleet. We were ordered to retreat immediately and resume our
assigned patrol. With reluctance, I ordered my escorts to move out of
weapons range, then to cloak and warp out.
We arrived cloaked in the Nimitz system to find it, to our disappointment,
completely empty. Our arrival in the Bradley system was almost as
disheartening. We encountered a civilian liner, the Altair Star. While it
would have been gratifying to destroy the vessel, (and cadet Jaghjech argued
for clearance to do just that), I felt that it would be dishonorable. We
allowed it to move on unmolested. When it was out of range, we set course
for the Patton system.
Finally, there, we found a worthwhile target in a Miranda class light
cruiser that seemed to be guarding two freighters. One was a Bulldog FRT,
and the other was 6Y-6000 class. While I was confident that the Pipeq and
Chuvon could easily destroy the Miranda, I decided to take no chances. I
ordered them to join me in a cloaked attack on the light cruiser. We could
then hunt down the freighters at our leisure.

"What Are Your Orders, Captain?"
(TOS Era)

USS Ares
Roddenberry Class Explorer
Science Officer's Log
Commander Al Rashid
In the aftermath of the Narada/Red Matter detonation near the Alpha Centauri
system, we are one of a dozen science ships pressed into emergency
survey/recovery operations. While the system itself seems to be safe from
the effects of the black hole, there are dozens of worlds in the vicinity
that are suffering sometimes unstable and unpredictable consequences. The
Ares itself was assigned to what was the only class M planet in an adjacent
system, designated as Newton in the starcharts. Newton III was home to a
twelve-person observation research outpost studying localized
micro-disturbances in the space/time continuum. Those micro-disturbances are
now major disturbances, quite literally all around us, and one after-effect
has been the destabilization of the system's sun. That destabilization has
effectively changed Newton III from Class M to Class L (Marginal) with a
rocky and barren surface and extremely little surface water. The atmosphere
has suffered extreme changes, reading as primarily oxygen/argon, with a high
concentration of carbon dioxide. The science team is gone, and only very
tough plant life remains. Fortunately, it won't be difficult to reestablish
an outpost here, and they'll have plenty of work to do. The loss of this
team is a tragedy, but considering that Nero was seconds away from turning
Earth into a black hole, all of us who survived can count ourselves very
lucky.

Dev Notes:
This summary represents what is almost a relaunch for the summary I found
that I was working very hard at playing/playtesting the game all week, then
working hard at essentially writing probably a thousand words of fiction
completely separate from the week's work. Now I'm using the week's work to
comprise the summary, which is in fact what should happen. And I may again
explore the concept of tying game play in to the Command College. And of
course, I've written a very short and simple "Captain's Log" set in the 2009
movie A/OS Alternate Original Series Era.
